Resumo: This study aims at questioning Specialized Education Service in order to understand what complementary knowledge means in the education process of students with disabilities and pervasive developmental disorders in regular school settings. It takes interaction between regular classrooms and Specialized Education Service as potentiating environments in the process of special education. It intends to investigate human development and show the learning possibility of every human being. The study is based on theories by Lev Semenovich Vygotsky and, as far as special education is concerned, we analyzed productions by researchers in this field, such as Padilha, and Kassar, among others. The methodology employed was collaborative critical action research, because we believe it is able to produce other forms of knowledge, as well as trigger/follow snapshots of change for challenges posed to teaching practice and to those involved in the research process. As data collection tool, we adopted reflective dialogues by focus groups, participant observation and semistructured interviews. The study took place at a public municipal school in the City of Serra, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The main notes refer to the meaning of Specialized Education Service as a contribution for accessing school knowledge combined with curricular knowledge, taking special education students’ possibilities of into account. In this path, we realized how important it is the interaction between professionals responsible for the schooling process of individuals enrolled in regular schools. Through these collaborative relations, whether during systematic planning, informal conversations or continued education moments, there are opportunities for dialoguing about conflicts and challenges in the complex processes of teaching-learning. As far as complementary knowledge is concerned, we could see that, first of all, it would be necessary to potentiate the classroom and evaluate the process learning, thus creating support to specialized education service. It is a known fact that, according to the laws in force, this service does reproduce what is worked in the classroom, and it is not a remedial class, either. Through this investigation, we were able to learn that complementary knowledge is that in which students still have to reach or potentiate, considering their performance in class; in which they follow the curriculum experienced by their peers and perform tasks made available to all students, according to their own conditions and possibilities, so that they can feel part of the schooling process in a cultural setting.
