Resumo: The Civil engineering has been going through a time when structural designs have been developed so that the structural system presents differentiated elements, caused by the aesthetic aspect, often daring and innovative, caused by the slenderness of the building or by the economy making the structure, in general, more light. This implies in a biggest control over the development of projects of buildings with more accurate analysis of the structure and using of methods that achieve results more similar to real models. As a result, in the last decades, some criteria and methods were created for the purpose of evaluating important aspects of a building, with regard to global and local stability. Among them, it is necessary to mention the parameters of instability a e yz. . For this reason, in recent years, several studies have been developed to understand which are the influences of these methods on the structures, estimate its internal mechanisms and actions to be taken to reduce the effects of global instability. In this sense, this work has the following objectives: to introduce the basic concepts of the instability parameters a e yz in accordance with what is clearly defined in the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 6118; to present the results of simulations of models in the Brazilian structural software TQS varying the stress of compression in the columns in order to relate these values with the stability parameters, and present actions that can be adopted in buildings to minimize the effects of global instability.
