Resumo: The use of transit time ultrasonic flow metershas been increasing in recent years, and undoubtedly there is aneed for the development of Brazilian technology in this field of instrumentation. This work is dedicated to the study of flow measurement in heavy oils by ultrasound with the intention of calibrating the prototype and verifying the validity of the statistical procedures used in order to reduce the uncertainties in the readings. To accomplish this, effects of possible errors of thetransit-timeflowmeter areanalyzedexperimentally and validatedin relation to a reference flow meter. The calibration performed bylinear regression showed constant errors (0.5-0.9m3/h) between operating ranges (5-25m3/h), thus obtaining errors of 15% for worst cases(lower flows)and 3.3% for better cases. Alinearization method was proposed to minimize the effects of the measuring process in the final uncertainty calculation. Increasingthe frequency of data acquisition was also proposed with the same intention. This led to uncertainties of 1-4%. The dependence of this meter was also observed in relation to processvariablesduring theanalysis. This work concludes thatthe prototype developed can be commercialized in order to meet the needs of the lack of this national technology in the market
