Resumo: Software development pervades all sectors of the economy, from industry to agribusiness and from mining to tourism. Advances in the field of Information Technology (IT) have made possible, through innovations, to create an extensive range of benefits for the market and for society. Based on these notes, this dissertation aims to analyze the importance of innovation for the competitiveness of software development companies’ in the city of Vitória, in the state of Espírito Santo (ES). Under the neo-Schumpeterian theoretical contribution, it shows the particular characteristics of the innovation process and its competitiveness factors. From the competitive strategies of firms, their relevance to the collective development of the segment, its induction to innovation and technological diffusion, its sources of knowledge and information necessary for the process of innovation and learning. It also highlights the international and national dynamics of the segment, considering its innovation initiatives to increase competitiveness in the sector. In addition, it presents an empirical approach where, based on the responses of the companies in the segment, it denotes the process of innovation and importance of innovative initiatives for the development of these companies.
