O comércio como propulsor do poder político em Iconha: o coronel Antônio Duarte (1889-1915)

In the century XIX, the area that today understands the districts of Piúma and Iconha it presented a great economical development and population growth, mainly the village of Iconha that it goes he/she becomes a prosperous villa starting from the end of the century XIX and beginning of the XX, starting from the commercial activities of the firm Duarte and Beiriz. In that context, he/she grows a culture political clientelista in that the trade will be the propeller to obtain and to maintain the political power. Like this, it is questioned as the development of the firm, of colonel's Antônio José Duarte property, it made possible that he reached the political power in the villa of Iconha and it integrated the political capixaba in the period of 1889-1915. For so much, the research was accomplished starting from the reading of works on the political system of the First Republic to orientate the discussions on the theme, as well as works of the local history, and of primary sources that consist in the File of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Iconha and of the State Public File that were analyzed and discussed to the light of the research problem. Like this, we presented in the first chapter of the area in the century XIX, demonstrating how it happened the settlement process and economical development, especially your relationship with the colony of New Rio and the English immigration led by Thomas Dutton Júnior and your contribution for so that we can understand, starting from the second chapter, the context in which the Commercial House Duarte and Beiriz settled down in Iconha. The formation of the small property is pointed out with the foreign immigrants' coming, that they acquired the lands of the referred firm, and the urban growth of the villa, for the trade that provided to your proprietors, especially to colonel Duarte, to reach the political power, presented subject and discussed in the third chapter. The political culture is presented in Iconha explaining that the established dependence between the merchant and the population resulted in a faithful electorate. The commercial house financed the purchase of the lands for the immigrants, he/she sold to credit plan goods and utensils and he/she bought the production of the coffee, that most of the time was used to discount in the debts, what left the local population harnessed the merchant, becoming like this a colonel vendeiro. He gave way, the trade it was the middle so that colonel Duarte if it transformed of outsider in gentleman of the municipal district, when being worth of the dependence of the population with relationship to your businesses. That context is discussed and analyzed to the light of theoretical works on the New Political History and the political system of the First Republic, presenting like this the regional politics, in what especially plays the forms of to obtain and to maintain the political power, contributing to enlarge the knowledge on Espírito Saint history.
