Resumo: Due to outnumbered intervenient causes (institutional, individual, socioeconomic, political and cultural ones) student retention presents itself as one of the most complex issues of college management still in our present time. This scenario is not different at UFES. Previously carried out researches have indicated a dreadful situation for the courses offered at Centro de Artes, which are the following ones: Architecture and Urbanism, Fine Arts, Visual Arts (Day Shift), Visual Arts (Night Shift), Cinema and Audiovisual Media, Communication Journalism, Communication Advertising, Design, Music Bachelor Degree, Music Licentiate Degree. Amongst all the Academic Centers at UFES, Centro de Artes presents the highest percentage of retention students, that is, students who will not finish their courses within the ideal estimated time. Aiming to find information on what has students delaying their graduation and also aiming to deal with these issues on a deeper ground, the first part of this essay was conceived to present a qualitative research with coordinators of the collegiate surveyed courses. Further on, students in moderate or severe retention situation were asked to answer a partly-open questionnaire. A random stratified sample per course and per type of retention of 262 students was reached. During the data analysis, besides traditional statistics analysis, multivariate models of factorial analysis were used to evaluate the main determining aspects of students’ retention and main reasons were considered: individual, institutional and external-socioeconomic. From the obtained data, the results of qualitative and quantitative researches was synthesized, and then, the groups of factors causing retention were established: a) student - worker feature; b) course curricula; c) courses and University structure; d) labor market in Arts area. Finally, measures have been proposed to minimize problems about the structures of the courses , the university administration and student integration, so that more students graduate in their courses within the estimated time through pedagogic projects and, due to that, more people may have access to Public Higher Education
