Redescrição, osteologia craniana e limites de distribuição geográfica de Characidium timbuiense Travassos, 1946 (Characiformes: Crenuchidae), com descrição de três espécies novas

A redescription of Characidium timbuiense Travassos 1946 is provided, including the cranial osteology. Characidium timbuiense is distinctive from the species within the genus, with the exception of C. grajahuense, C. pterostictum and C. vidali, by the presence of polyedric shaped spots distributed over the middle and low portions of lateral sides of body. The species, known only for headwaters of rio Timbuí, has its distribution expanded. Its geographical limits were stablished, corresponding to rio Piraquê-Açu basin on North, Atlantic Ocean on east, rio Itapemirim basin on south and watershed divide between the rio Doce and neighbor drainages on west. Characidium timbuiense is compared with nominal species and potentially new forms, geographically close. Three potentially new species are described. Characidium sp. "caparaó", from montane region of Caparaó; Characidium sp. "cricaré", ranging from Rio Jucuruçu to the Rio Itapemirim and Characidium sp. -doce?, apparently endemic to the Rio Doce basin. Finally, an identification key is available for recognition of Characidium species on Northeastern Mata Atlântica between the rivers Jucuruçu to Itabapoana.
