Resumo: The following study aims to exam in to what extension does the organizational improvisation manifests itself into the management of medium and small business. In theoretical terms, this study adopts concepts and definitions related to strategy, organizational improvisation and the specificities of medium and small business. More specifically, it focuses on the strategic management and the decisions made by managers of four organizations in the face of the needs of adaptation towards unpredictable situations. The study of the practices adopted by these firms managers were investigated in business of the mortuary section, that faced an increase on demand, brand-new sanitary regulations, financial crisis, lack of resources, etc. This study explores the practices understood as strategic, mainly as a less costly and fast alternative towards situations of pressure. Hence, it gives emphasis to the role of sensemaking into the adoption of deliberately strategy, emergent strategy, micro strategy and organizational improvisation. Thus, it is a multiple case study of qualitative, descriptive and exploratory nature. The data was collected by using interviews and the analysis was done with thematic analysis. The tracing of the improvisational cases allowed a deep analysis of the context in which the improvisation manifested itself and the elements that facilitated its occurrence. From the investigation, it was revealed that organizational improvisation manifests itself primordially in contexts of informal management, in which a flexible structure allows managers to find solutions based on experience and insights.
