Resumo: This dissertation investigated marital relationships of couples with a drug addict, using a literature review, narrative analysis of the marital trajectory of chemical dependents and analysis of contingencies of recurrences of psychoactive substance use. To achieve these objectives, three qualitative studies were developed. In the first study, a bibliographic review was carried out seeking how the theme of love relationships in chemical dependence is presented in the literature. The PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo databases were searched. Thematic analysis and categorization of the publications were carried out and divided into tree thematic categories according to their contents. The results demonstrated the importance of spouse / family involvement in the recovery of the drug addict. The second study performed narrative analyzes in order to elaborate theoretical models about the marital trajectory of drug addicts. Multiple case studies presented the narrative analyzes of four heterosexual couples. The results demonstrate that the report of the beginning of relationships is romanticized by the spouses and as the pattern of substance use evolves, the negative consequences of addiction become the focus of the discourse. The wife's participation in the treatment and the couples' acquisition of knowledge about chemical dependence were relevant for the recovery. The third study analyzed contingencies of episodes of (re) occurrence of psychoactive substance use throughout the marital behavioral histories of drug addicts. The analyzes presented common contingencies including, invitations to drink, loss, deprivation, social support, social withdrawal and physiological conditions.
