Resumo: The present study is a situational diagnosis of drug use by students in high school in the city of Castelo/ES, as well as an insight into the analysis of these young people about the PROERD as a public policy to prevent the use and abuse of these drugs. Through a quantitative survey, conducted with the application of a validated questionnaire, were interviewed 303 high school youth. Containing within it the major doctrines and knowledge produced relating to this topic, the research measured the use of narcotic substances and characterized the users of illicit drugs and non-drug users, as well as propitiated a critical reflection of the reasons for use of such substances, the family's participation in this context and other aspects that permeate the use of said substances. In general, there was a large consumption to legal and illegal narcotics, especially with regard to alcohol and marijuana. However, it is worth noting that the situation described above is not valid for all types of substances. Regarding the profile of users of illicit drugs, it was noticed that some prejudices are demystified, since research has shown a proportional majority of women, white, middle class, religious, who attend Umbanda and evangelical churches, with heads of enlightened families, with complete secondary or higher education training, among other characteristics. Regarding the PROERD, the survey results showed that the perception of young people submitted to the program considered with a great satisfaction, getting between 90-95% approval in the pursuit of preventing drug use
