Resumo: | The studies about ritual kinship of slaves, consecrated at the baptismal font, have achieved greater relevance in Brazilian historiography in the past years and turned into a central object of several researches that focus on the analysis of the widest sociabilities taken by slaves in the slaveholding Brazil. The state of Espírito Santo, during the eighteenth century, offered interesting material for discussion about the subject, since the territory was marked by a variety of demographic profiles of the slave population. From church records of baptism, post mortem inventories, reports made by presidents of the province, population maps, censuses and governorate funds, it was intended to identify patterns of behavior in the formation of the ritual kinship among the captives, and to understand them from the analysis of the socioeconomic and also cultural context in which they were placed. These tasks allowed the detection of the influence of the godfathering as an element of formation of various communities in central and southern Espírito Santo. Beyond the quantitative approach, the research involved a qualitative methodological approach, as well. The aim was to, using the data crossing, express the behavioral diversity of the captives, emphasizing the interactions within the slaves and the families of society in the state of Espirito Santo. This work allowed to insert the Espírito Santo into the debate on the subject and also notice the influence of the popular Catholicism on the slaves of the region. In other words, it was possible to observe the presence of the sacred element in the slave families, such as their political meanings in the community through the ritual of godfathering. |
