Resumo: Seven species from the genus Mimosa were investigated with respect to their chemical composition. These species belong to three taxonomical sections: Batocaulon (Mimosa acutistipuIa, M. arenosa, M. tenuifIora and M. verrucosa), Habbasia (M. camporum and M. pigra) and Calothamnos (M. scabrella). It was determined total lipid content, fatty acid composition, carbohydrate and total protein content of the seed meals which were submitted to extraction at different pH values. The seed extracts were investigated with respect to their soluble protein content, the presence of hemagglutinating activity and behaviour on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Regarding to the seed lipid and fatty acid composition, the results showed that their ratios could be useful as taxonomic markers in the differentiation of species from the same genus but not among sections. Although some of these species have shown the presence of hemagglutinating activity, this parameter proved not to be useful to discriminate Mimosa sections. The comparison of the SDS-PAGE protein patterns showed the presence of three major groups of bands which characterize the Mimosa species. These group of bands can suggest a common origin for these species. Nevertheless, when all the quantitative data were submitted to statistical cluster analysis, no taxonomic correlation with BARNEBY'S (1991) sistematics was found.
