Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of calcium anacardate (CA) and citric acid (CAc) as alternative growth promoters in rations for weaned piglets, on performance, occurrence of diarrhea, pH of gastrointestinal contents, blood parameters, intestinal morphometry and immunohistochemistry. The experimental period was 42 days, divided in period I (21 to 32 days), period II (21 to 42 days) and total period (21 to 63 days). A total of 96 piglets with a mean weight of 5.965 ± 0.804 kg were distributed in a randomized block design, with 4 treatments and 8 replicates, considering the bay containing 3 animals as experimental unit. The treatments consisted of: negative control (NC) - ration without addition of growth promoter; positive control (PC) - ration with antibiotic growth promoter (AGP), ration containing 0.6% CA + 1% CAc and ration containing 1% CA + 1% CAc. It was observed, during the whole period of the experiment that the piglets that received antibiotic growth promoter and the two levels of CA associated with CAc presented better feed conversion compared to the negative control treatment. Although, it did not reduce the occurrence of diarrhea, the association of CA and CAc resulted in a higher mucosal thickness (MT) in relation to the animals fed without growth promoter. Moreover, they presented results similar to AGP treatment with relation to villus height (VH) and absorptive area (AA) in the duodenum of piglets. It was observed that animals treatment with 1% CA + 1% CAc presented higher hematocrit results, for MCV, MCHC and monocytes, piglets fed with ration containing calcium anacardate and citric acid showed values similar to those fed with diet containing AGP. Considering that there were benefits in intestinal morphometry and in serum parameters, in addition to showing no impairment in performance, the association of calcium anacardate and citric acid may be an AGP for weaned piglets.
