Open-air Academies for the Elderly have been implanted in several Brazilian cities, however, the profile of the elderly who use the equipment of these academies is still unknown. This study aims to describe the profile of elderly users of open-air academies in the city of Fortaleza. A cross-sectional study was carried out using a questionnaire applied to 374 elderly people aged 60 and over, users of the first 11 open air academies installed in Fortaleza. Sociodemographic data, clinical conditions and standard of use were collected. It was verified that the majority of the elderly were women (54.7%), aged 60-69 years (66.8%), white (66%), married (61%), (38.5%) and higher education (34.8%), mostly retirees or pensioners (77.3%). Among the self-reported clinical conditions, hypertension (40.9%), high cholesterol (32.4%), osteoarthritis (26.2%) and alcohol consumption (31.6%) were the most common conditions Reported. Regarding the profile of use, the majority (68.2%) used the academies for over a year, for a time of up to 30 minutes a day (49.5%), attending at least 5 days a week ( 51.1%), living in the same neighborhood where the academy was located (83.2%), moving to it on foot (72.5%). Just over half (50.5%) underwent medical evaluation before beginning exercise. The majority (84%) practiced another exercise and had previous practice history (74.6%), and more than half (55.3%) practiced sports when young. A large proportion received family support (66%). Improvement in physical fitness and health was the most cited reason (93%) for the practice. Life improvement with practice was reported by 93.6% of the subjects. A prevalence of overweight was found in 42.8% of the individuals. Few differences were found among groups that used gyms installed in locations of different economic conditions. It was verified that the elderly present a young and active profile, being the conditions of health of greater prevalence in this group easily managed with the practice of physical activity. Individuals presented similar characteristics regardless of the economic context in which they are inserted. |
