Resumo: The ceramic activity has an important role in the Brazilian economy. However there are big impacts on the environment and society, causing changes in the environment and in the lives of people who perform these activities or live close to sites of raw-material exploitation or manufacturing of ceramic products. In this perspective, this study aimed to analyze the social and environmental impacts produced by activities in the ceramic industry in the city of Crato- CE, Brazil. Evaluative research carried out in the rural zone of Crato-CE. Data collection happened from 28th September to 8th December 2010 and used questionnaires with the owners and interviews with the workers of ceramic industries and residents of the surrounding areas. The data produced after the questionnaires were coded and stored in EXCEL software and processed by SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The ethical aspects of research involving humans were respected. The results found were presented considering: 1) The profile of the ceramic industries of Crato-CE that presented labor with little or no qualifications, low technological level, use of rudimentary techniques and technologies, 2) Aspects concerning the workers in these industries showing low educational level, leisure activities performed in a timely manner, lack of job security and the presence of several diseases, 3) Aspects inherent to the impacts caused by the ceramic activity to the residents and the environment showed that air pollution and modification of the natural landscape are prominent factors. Finally we hope that this study contributes to support the decisions of public and private managers in environmental planning, providing quality of life for workers and communities besides the environmental sustainability
