Resumo: This study aimed to assess the educational and social impacts resulting from the expansion and growth of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) towards the countryside. To bring completion to this study, which focused on the expansion of higher education as an aspect of the university democratization, some historical clippings were necessary. Aspects of higher education in the state of Ceará also deserved approach, given the need to understand their evolution over the time. It’s included in this overview the trajectory of UFC towards the districts of Ceará. Regarding the methodological procedures which guided the investigation, this research, literature and documents at one time, it was classified as exploratory and descriptive. The research technique of the analysis content was used to categorize the textual units contained in the linguistic surface from the answers of researched people, which received qualitative approach. The evaluation of educational and social repercussion motivated by the expansion of the UFC included secondary data provided by the Department of Institutional Development from the referred institution. These data express the result of inquiries asked to students, professors and residents of the local communities where the UFC advanced campuses were installed. The analysis enabled the delineation of the UFC process of expansion towards the countryside, as well its reiteration as urgent and essential to the regional development, which covered the benefits that it was brought up and any other barriers that needs to be overcome.
