Resumo: The Alpinia zerumbetis a plant popularlyused to treat hypertension and anxiety. Studies, particularly with the essential oil from the leaves of Alpinia zerumbet (OEAz) demonstrated hypotensive, vasodilator, antioxidant actions, among others. The objective of this study wasto analyze the effect of OEAz in cardiovascular and autonomic function in rats with isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction(MI). Male Wistar rats were used weighing between 250 and 350 grams and divided into four groups: control, water by gavage for 7 days and subcutaneous saline on days 6 and 7; ISO water by gavage 7 days and isoproterenol 150mg/kg on days 6 and 7; OEAz, OEAz 100mg/kg by gavage 7 days and subcutaneous saline on days 6 and 7; ISO+OEAz, OEAz 100mg/kg by gavage 7 days and subcutaneous isoproterenol on days 6 and 7. The blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were measured by pressure catheter in the abdominal aorta. The electrocardiogram was recorded using derivation DII. It was inserted a polyethylene cannula in the cavavein To administrate the drugs phenylephrine (0.5, 1 and 2ug/ kg) and sodium nitroprusside (5, 10 and 20 ug / kg) to assess the baroreflex, serotonin (2, 4, and 16ug / kg) to evaluate cardiopulmonary receptors and atropine (3 mg / kg) and propranolol (4mg / kg) to evaluate the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) was derived from the pulse interval and the variability of BP(VBP) from the BP data. With regard to cardiovascular parameters was significantly higher the HR and cardiac work of OEAz group compared to the ISO. The RR interval was shorter in OEAz group compared to ISO, the duration of the QRS complex was higher in ISO and ISO+OEAz groups compared to the control and the ISO group compared with the OEAz, the QT interval was higher in groups ISO and OEAz+ISO compared to the control and the OEAz as long as in the corrected QT interval, Q wave was deeper in OEAz+ISO group compared with the control and OEAz, the R wave was higher in the control group compared with others groups, the T wave and ST segment were higher in ISO group and ISO+OEAz compared with the control and OEAz. The average HRV in the time domain was higher in the ISO group compared to OEAz and OEAz+ISO, the same occurred in HRV in the frequency domain in the low frequency band. The VPA in the high frequency band was greatest in the group OEAz compared to ISO. The cardiopulmonary reflex showed significant variation in the BP intermediate dose of serotonin compared with the other, and the variation of the group's control FC compared to OEAz ISO. The intrinsic FC was lower in the ISO group compared with the control and the sympathetic vagal index was higherin ISO group than in control. The essecial oil didn ́t reduce the infarct area comparing ISO and OEAz+ISO groups The conclusion is that pretreatment with OEAz was not able to reverse the hemodynamic and electrocardiographic but reduced the sympathetic modulation damage caused by MI.
