Resumo: The accelerated waste production process is a natural consequence of consumption. Almost all consumption generates surplus that is not used and is inadequately disposed. Consumption is associated with the problem of waste, thr one that could be avoided. The negative environmental impacts generated by human activity, nowadays, are due to the process of resource extraction, the overspending of energy in production and improper disposal of waste. This study aimed to analyze Socrelp – Pirambu Trash Recycling Community Society model, showing the role played by the entity in the life of tem municipal solid waste collectors and the impacts to the environment, society and economy in the city of Fortaleza. To achieve the research objectives were realized: literature review, questionnaires, interviews, visits to Socrelp and some other institutions related to recycling and to the environment. The data were tabulated, analyzed, interpreted and presented in tables, using descriptive statistics. Also, were built a Sustainability Index drawn up by three other indices: Socioeconomic Development Index, Social Capital Index and the Environmental Index. Survey data has indicated an average level of sustainability, verifying that the working hypothesis was accepted: Socrelp performs an important function in terms of environmental, economic and social development. The great challenge for public policies, particularly those related to sustainable development, is to generate employment and income in order to meet the basic needs of human beings, but without neglecting the environmental aspects, without compromising the ability of future generations have to meet their own needs. Using techniques that don´t harm the environment, and reducing the negative impacts caused by the economy, the Socrelp municipal solid waste collectors have performed their functions.
