Resumo: This text approaches the ocurrence of unplanned pregnancy in women that referred to know how to use some modem contraceptive method and were users of public prenatal Services in Fortaleza, Ceará. We adopted a qualitative approach phenomenologically fundamentaded for its largest adaptation in the elucidation of symbolic aspects related to the conceptions and practices of unplanned pregnancy. The theoretical axes of this text were: the ethyologic model proposed by Ngokwey (1988), that it presents a multidimensional conception of the reality, sistematized in four dimensions: natural, psicossocial, socioeconomic and supernatural, and the perspective of racionality (LUZ, 1988), that we classified in agreement with the man-nature-sacred relationship modifications in the history ofthe human thought. We used semi-structured interviews and participant observation techniques. Fourteen women were interviewed and the narratives we obtained were classified in categories and themes in order to proceed the analysis of the material. Some results of this investigation were: the specificity of some categories and themes, according to the women’s age group (adolescent and adult); the presence of a multidimensional conception about fertility and contraception; the ruptures and continuities among the rationalities, constituiting re-interpretations of the meanings on fertility and contraception.; the estrangement of the biomedical model, that bases actions of health as the fammily planning, of the conceptions originating from the women, what can justify the ineficacy of the educational strategies commonly adopted in the health Services.
