Resumo: 4 ABSTRACT Human adenovirus (HAdV) is commonly viral agent associated with infections of the respiratory tract, both upper and lower, mainly in children under the age of five. HAdV are cl assified into seven species (A - G) and divided into 54 types. Hexon protein is primarily responsible for inter - and intra - group antigenic variation of the virus. The aim s of this study ware to characterize the periods of circulation and the diversity of species and types of HAdV found in Fortaleza, Ceará - Brazil, for 150 consecutive months (from January 2001 to June 2013). Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was used for the detection o f HAdV, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza A and B, parainfluenza virus 1, 2 and 3; and direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) was used for detection of human metapneumovirus (HMPV). PCR and nested PCR followed by sequencing the six hypervariable region s of the hexon gene were used to characterize the species and types of HAdV. HAdV were detected 290 (3.41%) of the 8,517 samples, 60 (20.69%) of those found in coinfection with one, two or three viruses. A total of 190 (65,52%) HAdV were molecularly charac terized: 162 HAdV belonging to species B (85.72%), 21 to HAdV - C (11.11%) and 6 to HAdV - 3 (3, 17%), getting a strain without identification. The species circulated throughout the period the predominance of species B in almost all years analyzed. Seven diff erent types were identified circulating in Fortaleza during the analysis period. The predominant types were 3 (67.73%) and 7 (17.80%). HAdV - 3 was found in all the years and the HAdV - 7 was not observed in years 2006, 2010 and 2011. Only in 2011, all kinds o f species identified C circulated, and the only representative of the species and the HAdV - 4, began to be identified in our population only from 2007. Better understanding of the circulation of HAdV can be achieved if the monitoring is continuous and asso ciated with the use of methods of greater sensitivity in the detection of these viruses.
