Resumo: Water security has been on the world stage in the last ten years. Initially linked to food security and conflicts of continental dimensions and wars, it is increasingly encompassing larger scales, such as the household dimension. Faced with the urban reality of population density, not monitoring infrastructure in the process of urban sprawl and conflicting water management, it is necessary to analyze the home beyond the consumer view as payer within the current management model. The District of Pecém - Municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante located on the west coast of the state of Ceará / Brazil - underwent intense transformations in its urban area in the last thirty years, due to the installation of an Industrial and Port Complex in part of its territory. In this way, the objective of this work was to investigate water security within the urban area of the district, taking into account the dynamics of urban expansion. The parameters for reaching a water safety are associated to the quality, acceptability of the water and affection to it. Where the absence or insufficiency of one of these leads to the condition of water insecurity. The urban area of Pecém was divided in seven, for better analysis and comparison effect. Research forms were applied with questions about the home water reality, interviews were conducted and field notes analysis. Two of the subareas did not reach Water Safety, mainly due to non-acceptability of quality and non-affection with water. Regarding the urban area of Pecém in general, there is a water security condition, due to access to more than one source, causing the resident to resort to another source when there is problem with the main one, giving the false sense of continuous supply and quality, not causing him to worry about lack of water or generate intense conflicts in the house.
