Resumo: The relationship between environmental heterogeneity and diversity is explained by the hypothesis of habitat heterogeneity, which assumes that more heterogeneous environments harbor more species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of environmental heterogeneity on Teredinidae species in the Acaraú river mangrove (Ceará), considering environmental gradients (horizontal and vertical). Three points of the mangrove along the Acaraú river were characterized as to the vegetal structure and in each one, trunks were collected in order to compare the composition and distribution of Teredinidae that live there. The results showed that the environmental gradients (horizontal and vertical) and the slope of the terrain influence the structural development of the mangrove forest, favoring structural development in the middle estuary (Point 2) and greater environmental heterogeneity in the lower estuary (Point 1). Habitat heterogeneity was related to the diversity of Teredinidae, as characteristics of the more heterogeneous forest influenced the occurrence and diversity of species. The vertical gradient of flooding influenced the distribution of teredinids, however, the effect of the horizontal salinity gradient was not clear due to sampling only in the dry period, when the salinities were elevated along the horizontal gradient.
