Proposal for structuring the method of job-analysis to identify the core meaning of the term "mind" in philosophy of mind, based on the considerations of François Recanati and Gilbert Ryle. The diversity of competing meanings attributed to the term "mind" in the philosophy of mind poses the challenge of determining whether a singular, overarching meaning for this term exists. François Recanati's Truth-Conditional Pragmatics posits that words possess at least one core meaning, which is subject to contextual modulations. Building on this premise, this work proposes the structuring of a method grounded in Gilbert Ryle's insights and the ordinary language philosophical tradition of job analysis to determine the core meaning common to all uses of this term in the philosophy of mind. Accessing this core meaning could represent the first step toward envisioning the possibility of a unified theory of mind by revealing the points of contact between different approaches to the topic. The application of the method is exemplified through an analysis of competing theories of mind, specifically those of Daniel Dennett and Thomas Nagel. |
