Resumo: |
This work presents a study of characterization of structural ceramic blocks. The main goal of it is to investigate microstructure features of these blocks which determine their process of failure under compression. Eighteen ceramic blocks are subjected to compression up to failure. Samples are removed from specific blocks according to the results of the compression tests in order to characterize their microstructure. Investigation of microstructure is carried out by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy. Chemical analysis is realized by energy dispersion spectrometry. (EDS). Analyzing the results, it is possible to identify the existence of a basic relationship between shape and distribution of pores present in the microstructure and the process of failure under compression. Based on this relationship, a model is proposed to explain the failure mechanism of structural ceramic blocks. A metallographic study of microstructure is also presented. In addition, prisms (two blocks on top of each other joined by mortar) and small scale walls are assembled using three different mortar mixes. Prisms and small scale walls have strength determined. Finally, equations are proposed to relate measured properties of each element (prism and small wall) studied. |
