Resumo: This M.Sc. Dissertation utilizes many concepts of agribusiness, agriculture development and supply chain managementto make a diagnosis and to build a conceptual model aiming to contribute to make efficient and effective the supply chain management of the biodiesel produced using castor bean seeds. The work focuses on the poorest country area of the State of Ceara, inthe Northeastern Brazil. Such a supply chain was chosen because of not only the biodiesel importance as an energy alternative source to the non-renewable and environment pollutant sources but the positive impacts of castor bean production on the present Brazilian government social and economic inclusion policies. The work identifies the causes which have led to the decline of castor bean production sector in Brazil, highlighting the case of Ceara State, and shows that it is possible to bring back the past level ofits production if planning actions aiming to improve the castor bean biodiesel supply chain management were conceived and carried out. That means the implementation of actions to coordinate and integrate the activities of every actor involved with the mentioned supply chain. The work concludes that the partial vertical integration for the focused supply chain is the best alternative to an efficient governing structure in the study area due to its flexibility in the short run and also to the possible gains generated in the median and longrun with that management arrangement. A conceptual and systemic-based governing model is proposed to make feasible that kind of management arrangement.
