Over the years, we have followed the constant evolution in the process of appropriation of space and according to the interests of those who produce it, activities are carried out that underlie and characterize each place. Within this context the coastal area has reached a great relevance, being an object of interest that travels through the economic, social and tourist fields. In view of these premises, the research "Modern Maritime Practices on the Maranhão Coast: Reconfiguration of the Coastal Areas of Raposa and São José de Ribamar" aims to analyze the way in which modern maritime practices have been shaping the coast of the municipalities mentioned above. For that, it becomes necessary to return to the past and to know how these municipalities supported themselves in front of the maritimity that surrounds them. The research also explores maritimity as a phenomenon of external origin, since its characteristics are based on the Western model. From the place of the fear and repulsion, the sea gains a new look, happens to be considered place of discoveries and increments of new models of appropriation. These are the modern maritime practices that are configured on the coast from the need to recreate and enhance it. Knowing the process of occupancy of these municipalities, helps us to understand the way in which they are configured today. Some questions support research, among them: How is the process of occupation of the Maranhão coast characterized? What is the relation of the traditional population of the municipalities of Raposa and São José de Ribamar, with the maritimidade? What modern maritime practices have been incorporated into the beach areas of these municipalities? It is in search of these answers that the research is developed, with the intention of in the end contribute with actions, planning and new research that refer to the thematic.
