Resumo: The objective of this thesis is the semiological description of cover headline in printed newspapers as a multisemiotic structure, through the analysis and formalization of cohesion between components and derivates in object semiotic. The headline selects the form of a connotative semiotic. This fact redefines classic problems such as denotation, connotation, semiology and metasemiology, with epistemological and methodological consequences for the metalanguages of linguistic description. The assumed theoretical and methodological context is that of glossematics applied to the semiological description of an empirical object. The thesis employs the theoretical, methodological and descriptive apparatus in the manner in which they were developed in the Prolegomena (HJELMSLEV, 1961) and in the Résumé (HJELMSLEV, 1975). It selects, however, only the necessary and sufficient instrument for the elaboration of a specific procedure for the deduction and synthesis of the headline. The methodology follows the glossematic procedure, fulfilling the requirements of empirical and deductive description with effects on the organization of the research and on the formulation of the thesis. The descriptive adequacy of an object in the world cannot lose sight of the deduction of abstract classes that apply to that object and only to it. Deduction then produces two hierarchies: that of the object and that of the semiology that describes it. Objects and dependencies found in headline text chains are analyzed by this procedure. The internal dependencies found, defined by Hjelmslev as cohesion (RTL, D148 syntagmatic or paradigmatic ¥j ), are not incompatible with textual cohesion, despite to include connections between languages as far apart as notes and photographs. The formalization of analysis data in the semiology of the thesis requires conformity between the classes deduced in the object (semiological variables) and the formal classes in the glossematic theory (metasemiological constants). The procedure is concluded in the reintegration of the object by the synthesis, demonstrated through the hierarchies, chainings and cohesions found in the analysis and formalization of the components of the headline. The denotative semiotics of headline is defined by specific syntagmatics and paradigmatics that articulate with the verbal and visual languages that enter it. The language of the headline, however, is not to be confused with these languages. Something that seems counterintuitive, but fits satisfactorily into the theoretical context of glossematic hierarchies.
