Resumo: Saying you are vegan in a society based on a carnist culture is a great challenge. This fact is due to the prejudice against vegetarians and vegans (Rosenfeld, 2018; Macinnis e Hodson, 2017; Whorton, 1994), mainly when the motivation for such attitude is related to a moral non- conformism (Jertfelt, 2019), in other words, when the use of animals by humans is not considered a moral behavior. Therefore, many vegans start experiencing vystopia (Mann, 2015), that is the anguish of being vegan in a non-vegan world. Within this scenario, the main objective of this research is to investigate the constitution of the moral non-conformist ethos course (Holanda, 2020) in autobiographical narratives concerning how it is to be vegan in a non-vegan world. This enterprise is situated in The French Discourse Analysis acknowledging discourse as “a way of representation, action and identification” (Magalhães, 2020, p.15) and holds as its theoretical and methodological foundations the conceptions of narrative (Bertaux, 2010; Bruner, 2014; Ricouer, 1994, 2019) and autobiography that situate the research corpus in a large constellation of texts that talk about itself with its specificities in the constitution of meanings, in addition to the articulation of the notions of discursive ethos (Maingueneau, 2019), ethos course (Holanda, 2020) and narrative positioning (Maia-Vasconcelos, 2022). The progressive construction of this individual/collective ethos through the narrative positioning, implicit or explicit, reveals itself in a coherent and significant way for this specific collectivity through the dynamicity and productivity of the autobiographical narratives. The awakening narrative until, in fact, becoming and understanding itself as a vegan in a world that is not vegan reveals several images, projected by the narrator, underlining the presence of movement and fluidity in the construction of this ethos course. These images, often opposing, will be in constant confrontation regularly revisiting the passage port of this individual, that is the awakening to veganism. This awakening brought the knowledge and joy of being vegan, however dragged along the anguish (vystopia) and the suffering of being vegan in a non-vegan world.
