Resumo: In a conjuncture of transformations in the environmental context, it is crucially important to strengthen the debate between ethics and economics with regard to the environment, its scarce resources and concern for future generations. The role of economics and ethics in sustainability has been accentuated throughout the 21st century due to the constant debate between researchers and society about the projections and risks with regard to the ecological and environmental aspects of the planet. In view of the current environmental panorama and its long-term effects, social organizations and other entities are adopting a posture that demands more social responsibility and minimizes risks of environmental impacts, negative externalities as well as preservation of natural resources. The objective of this work is to make a brief discussion of what is sustainable development, to discuss about the economic instruments to protect the environment and to know the challenges of corporate sustainability and the motivation of companies to adapt to the concepts of sustainable development. The methodology was based on the review of previous studies, using bibliographical research and logging techniques. The indicators used in academic articles used in this study showed that companies concerned with environmental ethics and business sustainability generated higher profits for companies in the long run.
