The Northeast Region of Brazil stands out in the context of the rich expressions of national crafts. The practice of handicrafts contributes to the employability of the local labor force, using natural resources generally available in an ecologically correct way. This activity allows the conservation of the existing cultural repertoire and possibilities of attenuation of social inequalities, also contributing to the increase of tourism activities, improving the social development of the region. Understanding this web of complex relationships between crafts, craftsmen, their manufacturing processes associated with traditional knowledge and the use of leather as a raw material, observing the dynamics of management linked to sustainable development is necessary for understanding the coexistence in the semiarid Region of Cariri Cearense. The study is developed in the Cariri Region, located in the southern region of the state. This region is made up of nine municipalities, however, due to the expressiveness of the handmade production of leather articles, the focus of the research will be on three prominent municipalities: Juazeiro do Norte, Crato and Nova Olinda. The present research had as general objective to analyze the space of artisan production of leather articles, from the perspective of sustainable development, through the incorporation of cultural elements, directed the thought to the logic of valorization transmission of local knowledge and to the accomplishment of a sustainable regional development. |
