Resumo: |
The study of the knowledge of neonatology ward nursing aides, from São Paulo city, about their activities related to breastfeeding of normal newborn has as objective: a) verify the knowledge about to whom competes the activities related to breastfeeding; b) verify the nursing aides’ confidence in performing them or having to perform them; and c) furnish first Information for elaboration of training programs to neonatology nursing aides, in order to estimulate breastfeeding in neonatology wards. Two hundred and four nursing aides from São Paulo neonatology wards were submitted to a structured questionnary. The dependent variables were: mode of organization of the neonatology ward (rooming-in or traditional ) ; normal newborns to nursing aide rate; existence of nurses in the shift;years worked in a neonatology ward; experience in breastfeeding her own children; and previous training to perform the activities related to breastfeeding. In general, the nursing aides considered the activi ties related to breastfeeding of normal newborn as of their competence, but they suggest that the activities that neces- sitate physiology knowledge to be well done should be performed by other members of the health care team. They don't have confidencie in performing activities that require more comprehensive knowledge about physiology of amamentation and its techniques. These facts indicate that the nursing aides are not able to estimulate breastfeeding in a neonatology ward. So there should have training programs with periodic atualization about breastfeeding. Also there should be nurse supervision and full nursing team. The rooming-in should bq implanted in neonatology wards. |
