Objective: Evaluate the healing response of colo-colic invagination anastomosis comparing with single-layer running suture. Methods: Sixty female dogs (Canis familiaris) weighing 8.0-19.5 Kg supplied by a municipal dog pound were randomly distributed in two groups. In Group I (control), the animals were submitted to colo-colic anastomosis with a single-layer running suture (polypropylene thread 000). In Group II (study), the animals were submitted to colo-colic anastomosis by invagination secured by four cardinal sutures (polypropylene thread 000). At the end of the study period, the animals underwent to a second laparotomy to excise the anastomosed colon segment for histological and immunohistochemical analysis. The study parameters included body weight, abdominal adhesions, edema, vasoproliferation, type I and III collagen, myeloperoxidase and nitric oxide. The findings were statistically analyzed with Studentʼs t test (parametric data) and the Mann-Whitney test (non-parametric data). Results: The animals were euthanized with 20% potassium chloride (i.v.) under anesthesia with ketamine. Ten from each group were euthanized on the 7th postoperative day (POD7) and 20 on the 21st postoperative day (POD21). None animal died prior to euthanasia. Body weight was statistically similar in both groups. The median weight was 10.86 Kg, 9.98 Kg in Groups I, II respectively (p=0.41) on POD7 and 11.86 Kg, 11.55 Kg in Groups I, II respectively (p=0.71) on POD21. The abdominal adhesions incidence was statistically similar in both groups, (p=0.7383 on POD7; p=0.5685 on POD21), as well as for the levels of edema (p=0.3006 on POD7; p=0.7990 on POD21), vasoproliferation (p=0.1191 on POD7; p=0.0758 on POD21), type I collagen (p=0.4591 on POD7; p=0.3357 on POD21), type III collagen (p=0.2166 on POD7; p=0.2712 on POD21) and nitric oxide (p=0.3980 on POD7; p=0.4796 on POD21). The myeloperoxidase levels were also statistically similar for both groups (p=0.580 on POD7; p=0.755 on POD21). Conclusion: It was not demonstrated in this experimental sudy any significant difference on healing response between colo-colic anastomosis performed by invagination with single-layer running suture. |
