This work is an ethnographical approach to the way of being, thinking and acting of youngsters linked to a program of public policy of capacity and professional insertion. The temporality and the passageway to an adult life are discussed here having the work as the structuring element in the itinerary and projects of young lives. The field research was carried out in SOMAR PROGRAM – SAS, Fortaleza, Ceará, from April to July, 2004. This program has its aim the professional qualification associated with traineeship in public and private companies and young students of public high schools, according to specific legislation. The methodological orientation was based on methods and techniques of qualifying character, the inter-subjective aspects of the social phenomenon. The meetings were held with eleven youngsters. They were trainees and apprentices, men and women. Intermittent participation and observation as well as interviews were techniques used to understand and to explain the everyday life of young workers and the impact of that experience in the building of their projects of lives and identifies. The analyses of narratives point to a mixing of the forms of operation the rituals to the adult life. The work as a structural element of projects of life to this part of young population works not only as an opportunity of survival but also as a space of sociability, of subjective signification and building identity. The final considerations reveal the approximations realized in the everyday life of the young people and identify homogenous elements when we think of the young not only as a generational condition, but also as a segment which presents specifications of the context where they are inserted.
