This research has as objective a proposal to analyse the composition of poetic images and metaphors in Carlos Moliterno’s sonnets from his work A Ilha (1969). With a focus on recurring compositional elements, which make A Ilha a cohesive poetic work, we discuss the literary trope of the island, as well as some imagetic representations which create poetics of dissolution that is prevalent in Moliterno’s poetry. We bring the contributions of previous critics such as Vilela (1985), Bomfim (1999) and Chalita (2012) which offer important insights about A Ilha. Our theoretic framework is a compound of contributions about the notions, distinctions and similarities between the concepts of image and metaphor in literature, brought from Alfredo Bosi (1977), Michael Riffaterre (1984) Antonio Candido (1996) and José Paulo Paes (1997). These authors help us to put forward and ilustrate examples of a poetics of dissolution in A Ilha.
