Resumo: In modern life, the visual texts are increasingly recurrent in our daily lives and the effects of this influence the way we perceive, think and react in our personal and institutional relationships. The visual texts that are to be found in society are not built without intentions, but are full of purposes by the one who builds them. The need for visual literacy arises because images are present in many social practices. In this perspective, this study is situated in the Social Semiotics area, more specifically, in the relations between the image and its underlying embodied in the discourse. Our purpose is to reveal the political / ideological position of Editora Abril, through the description, analysis and interpretation of the discursive materiality present in the images associated with the verbal text presented in the covers of Veja magazine during the government of the political party 'Partido dos Trabalhadores' (2002 - 2016), which leaded the presidency of Brazil. Several authors discuss the systematic study of the image and the multimodal relationship between the visual text and the verbal text: Dionísio (2011); Kress & Van Leeuwen (1996); Barthes (1961, 1964); Martinec & Salway (2005); Carney and Levin (2002); Gomes (2015), among others. The analysis of the French Speech Discourse, also called Discourse Analysis (DA), based on the ideas of Michel Pêcheux (1993, 1997a, 1997c, 2006), works as a theoretical support for our analysis through its categories. Five covers of Veja magazine published between 2002 and 2016 as a corpus for description/analysis/interpretation were selected using the Socio-demographic Approach, by Kress & Van Leeuwen (1996) and Michel Pêcheux's analysis categories of DA, as well as of contributions from other supporting theories such as Color Theory. The results obtained demonstrated the potential of images in the plane of expression and the production of meaning. We can consider the important contribution of the visual grammar of Kress & Van Leeuwen (1996) in the reading of images, in which they solidifies a model of analysis of visual structures via a particular syntax of the images. The discourse reproduced in the covers meets the ideological position that nourishes the perspective of Capital, which would be, according to Vasconcelos and Cavalcante (2013), the discourse of the ruling class. The editorial board of Veja magazine enunciates the discourse of the ideology of Capital through the materialization of the written text and the images present in the covers. The distribution of political/ideological positions through magazines of national circulation would be a way of doing politics in Brazil.
