Resumo: | Currently, nutritional transition characterized by the decline of malnutrition and increasing obesity emerges as a serious public health problem. However, this coexistence is noticeable in low-income populations. Obesity, especially abdominal, predisposes individuals to a number of cardiovascular risk factors. In disadvantaged socioeconomic groups, the stature of the parents may be the result of the cumulative effect of poverty that lasts for several family generations, which is considered a good overall measure of social deprivation and the population better indicator of chronic nutritional deficiency resulting from malnutrition imposed early in life. Therefore, it is assumed that obesity results from poor individuals in a sequel of this energy malnutrition, and posits the possibility of malnutrition lead to a reduction in energy requirements. Several methods are able to measure total energy expenditure, and the doubly labeled water technique considered the gold standard for allowing studying the etiology of obesity by measuring energy expenditure. |
