Resumo: Due to the complex dynamics of nitrogen (N) in sandy soils of the humid tropics, strategies are needed to increase grain yield and N use efficiency (NUE) components in maize crop. Strategy to reduce N losses and improve NUE is used of urease inhibitors. Our hypothesis is that possible to increase the grain yield and NUE of maize plants that receive urea with urease inhibitors when compared with those plants receive only common urea. The aimed was to evaluate the influence of application of N in top-dressing with or without the use of urease inhibitor on maize grain yield and NUE components. A field experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications in a factorial scheme. Three N rates applied in topdressing in the plots: 30, 60 and 180 kg ha-1 N and two N sources: common urea and urea with N-yield™. Increased N rates applied in topdressing, independent of the N source used, result in a significant increase in dry matter production, grain yield and reduce the NUE components. Urea treated with urease inhibitor increase 45% on grain yield, 100% on NUE, 75% on N uptake efficiency, and 11.5% on N utilization efficiency when compared to common urea
