Resumo: The aim of this study was to verify the influence of the experimental diabetes on vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) in female rats. The animals were divided into control group (C group) and experimental diabetic group (D group) and were weighed in the beginning and at the end of experiments. Diabetes was induced by an endovenous injection of alloxan (41 mg/kg). After a week, the diabetes confirmation was done by glycemic evaluation. The infection vaginal was induced by Candida albicans yeasts and after a week the infection was detected by vaginal culture and smears stained by Papanicolaou. The infection control was made for a period of 5weeks. The results pointed to different glycemias between the C (74.8±2.6 mg/dL) and D groups (543.1±12.1 mg/dL) (P = 0.0001) and a significant body weight (P = 0.0072) decrease (227.6±4.77 g and 204±6.39 g to C and D group, respectively). Moreover, the culture, Papanicolaou smears and scanning electron microscopy (SCEM) demonstrated persistence of infection during the study period only in group D. The diabetes mellitus was favorable to the development and maintenance of VVC by Candida albicans.
