Resumo: | The objective of this descriptive study with correlational type was to investigate motivation, coping and characteristics of perfectionism of professionalized and not professionalized soccer players. The sample was divided in 2 groups, 63 professionalized with average age of 17,59 years (± 0,77), and 119 not professionalized with average age of 14,01 years (± 1,53). As measure instruments were used: Sport Motivation Scale; Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28; and Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale. Data analysis was performed through the testes: Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney and Spearman coefficient, adopting P<0,05. The results showed that in relation to motivation both athletes professionalized and not professionalized showed higher scores for intrinsic motivation with emphasis on intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation. Professionalized athletes presented higher scores in relation to not professionalized for intrinsic motivation to accomplish things, experience stimulation and for the self-determination index, showing statistical significant differences. The coping strategy of choice of the professionalized athletes was confidence and achievement motivation, as for those non professionalized the coping strategies of choice were coping with adversity, confidence and achievement motivation and coachability. Professionalized athletes showed higher scores in relation to not professionalized to the following coping strategies: peak under pressure, goal setting and confidence and achievement motivation, as well as for the sport confrontation index, all showing statistical significant differences. Perfectionism characteristics more frequent in the professionalized as in the not professionalized were organization and persona standards; the less frequent characteristic for both groups was parental criticism. Statistical differences between groups were observed in the subscales Parental expectancies and parental criticism with not professionalized showing higher scores in relation to professionalized and Personal standards and organization, with higher scores to professionalized athletes. The professionalized athletes showed correlations between the self-determination index and the sport confrontation index. In the correlations between motivation and perfectionism a correlation between adjusted perfectionism index and intrinsic motivation regulation styles. Also, a correlation was found between sport confrontation index and normal adjusted perfectionism. As for the non professionalized athletes correlations between the sport confrontation index and normal adjusted perfectionism. In conclusion, the results indicate that motivational factors showed by the athletes must be considered as influences in the selection and use of coping strategies during and stressful situation in sport competition, as well as indicative factors to the demonstration of personality characteristics, such as, perfectionism characteristics. |
