Analyze how the intellectuals Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (1862-1906) and João do Rio (1881-1921) described the initiatory rites of the manifestations of African origin in the late XIX century in Brazil constitutes the main objective of the thesis. In the works O animismo fetichista dos negros bahianos (RODRIGUES, 1935) and As religiões no Rio (RIO, 1906) the concepts of narrative and alterity are addressed based on the Cultural History (CERTEAU, 1982; HARTOG, 1999) and the initiatory rites (ELIADE, 2010) based on the History of Religions and Religiosities. It is about the possibility of analyzing both authors in front of a specific object, the initiatory rites, and seek to understand their enunciations and visions of world to point out their divergences and convergences based on the place where they speak (CERTEAU, 1982, p. 56)
