Resumo: | Activities performed by extraction of aggregates companies ? mining companies ? collaborate with development of cities like occurred in Maringa (state of Parana ? Brazil), because they provide raw material for construction. However, these mining activities cause some kinds of environmental impacts. Taking this into account, urban planning must be done in an orderly form with a safety margin around mining areas already installed or in areas where they can be installed in the future. Around the urban area of Maringa, there are four areas with aggregates extraction. In this context, the main target of this research was to identify what positive and negative environmental impacts are caused by these mining companies. With qualitative ? quantitative surveys performed in laboratory and field research, allied with use of geotechnology, it was possible to identify some kinds of environmental impacts, caused by activities of four researched mining companies. Negative impacts are verified on: vibration, noise, structural damage, dust, projectile launch and visual impact. Positive environmental impacts verified including Maringa and neighbor cities were: job creation (in the mining companies and service providers) and creation of several companies that resell aggregates from basalt extraction, to be used on construction as raw material. To soften negative impacts, it is suggested to increase range of vegetation between mining companies and urban area, use of less noisy equipment on mining companies and use of appropriate denotation techniques. Furthermore, it is recommended that competent agencies and involved society monitor their activities, based on current legislation about destination of mining areas after deposits are exhausted, as well as elaborate public policies to accord population on surroundings of mining areas |
