Resumo: | The use of miniplates changed some paradigms of Orthodontics and brought numerous benefits to patients, reducing the need for collaboration, facilitating control and predictability of treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the thickness of cortical bone by computed tomography cone beam in different skeletal patterns. A total of 62 patients of both sexes , divided into 3 groups were evaluated according to the facial pattern [ 1 = mesofacial group ( n = 29 ) , group 2 = brachyfacial ( n = 13 ) and group 3 = dolichofacial ( n = 20) ] . The measurements were performed in the maxilla in the anterior aspect of the zygomatic process of both sides above the first permanent molar region. The averages of measurements for comparison between groups were performed using the t test and ANOVA. Pearson's correlation between the values of FMA angle and thickness of the cortical bone of the jaw bone was performed. The results indicated a correlation between bone thickness and skeletal profile does not exist. However no patients in the group showed cortical dolichofacial greater than 2 mm thick and no patients in the group showed cortical brachyfacial less than 1mm thick. The results of this study suggest that the installation of miniplate anchorage must be performed with care and individualized way to minimize the risks and failure rates. |
