Resumo: The objective of this study was to identify the themes described by the mothers users of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) on the childcare service and the development of their children. Eleven mothers participated of the study. The participation on child care services was the main criterion for selection. The territorial and ascription of the Family Health Strategy (ESF) also were considered. They were interviewed with a semi structured questionnaire and the data were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using its contents. The reports of the mothers revealed important aspects of their empowerment process and about the reasons or grounds for the participation in the service. About maternal empowerment, there were reports of contributions of the child care service for the general feeding, breastfeeding, daily care and demand to other services. About the grounds of participation in the service, three mothers reported importance; two reported need and two indicated the service as a commitment to the development of the child. The study results suggest the continuity of investigation of child care services for direction of the strategies that enhance the connection between professionals and service users.
