Resumo: In this work we propose the synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide and zinc oxide modified with iron, obtained by the suspension of a polysaccharide and metal nitrates (like Zinc and Iron), well as th studying the viability of using these oxides in the treatment of textile dyes. The oxides as a powder were obtained by calcination at 600 ° C of the gel formed by the suspension of the respective metal nitrates in pectin. The structural and morphological forms that these oxides exhibit as well as their chemical composition are essential tools for its application. Therefore, the solids were characterized by simultaneous thermal analysis TG / DTA, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and determination of the specific surface area (BET method). After calcined, the solid was identified by XRD as zinc oxide. From this starting material, formed by a reaction between zinc and pectin, other material was obtained by the addition of a small quantity of iron nitrate. Initial tests showed that these oxides exhibit efficiency in photocatalysis, when tested in the degradation of the dye Reactive Black 5, demonstrating the viability of this proposal, which is based on a new route for the preparation of oxides and their application.
