OBJECTIVE: Investigate the knowledge and practices of early childhood educators and their relationship with the occurrence of severe respiratory diseases in children under five years in Guarapuava -PR. METHODS: For this purpose, the study covered two stages. In the first stage, the data were collected in the period from July to September 2015, in two hospital pediatric units through semi-structured interviews with 52 parents and/or guardians of children hospitalized with respiratory diseases. In the second phase, data collection occurred in a CECE chosen from data revealed in the previous step, which was conducted group interview with 19 educators, in November 2015. The quantitative data analysis was made by using simple descriptive statistics; already for qualitative data was used the technique of content analysis. RESULTS: It was found that the majority (80.8%) of the hospitalized children were not attending any CECE. The educators were able to recognize the signs and symptoms and more apparent in children and CECE the environment as a risk factor for the spread of respiratory diseases. It was demonstrated that children with respiratory symptoms attending the CECE generate fear and insecurity, while there is no dialogue between the educators and the family and to care. It was found that, according to the educators, the parents care and/or guardians with children with respiratory disease is poor. CONCLUSION: In this context, we emphasize the need for continuing education for the educators of CECEs so they can provide quality care to children with respiratory diseases, allowing the work with health professionals and families in order to transform reality beyond the hospital setting and primary care. |
