Resumo: The ichthyofauna of the Ribeirão do Pântano, a left bank tributary of Rio Mogi-Guaçu was studied on its composition, environmental distribution and seasonal variation. Samples of the ichthyofauna were obtained between May 2000 and July 2001. Several fish catching nets were used to collect: a large sized sieve; gill nets; several sized hand nets, and a hand trawl net. Results showed 62 species pertaining to 17 families and 6 orders. The most specious orders are Characiformes with 30 species and Siluriformes with 22 species, performing 82.1% of the ichthyofauna. The remaining orders are Gymnotiformes including 3 species, Perciformes 2 and Synbranchiformes only one species. This study also revealed a group of constant species: Astyanax altiparanae, A. fasciatus, Hyphessobrycon eques, Cheirodon stenodon, Serrapinnus notomelas, Characidium gomesi, C. cf. zebra, Steindachnerina insculpta, Leporinus striatus, Hoplias malabaricus, Gymnotus carapo, Eigenmannia virescens, Geophagus brasiliensis, Corydoras aeneus, Megalechis personata and Hypostomus ancistroides. A second group of species was determined by the accessory species which includes: Leporinus paranensis, Hoplosternum litoralle, Loricaria prolixa, Hypostomus cf. fluviatilis, H. cf. paulinus and H. regani. And finally a third group considered as accidental species: Serrapinnus heterodon, Cyphocharax modestus, Salminus hilarii, Leporellus vittatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus, Brachyhypopomus sp. cf. Callichthys callichthys, Paravandellia oxyptera, Parastegophilus paulensis, Imparfinis schubarti, Phenacorhamdia tenebrosa, Pimelodella gracilis, Pimelodus maculatus e Rhamdia cf. quelen. Discussions are also produced on the different sites of collection and the species preferences, and a comparison between the Pântano ichthyofauna and other small creeks of São Paulo State was provided.
