Resumo: |
The general objective of this work was to evaluate the personality, based on the theory of the Big Five, and its relationship with the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning in the elderly. Thus, two studies were conducted, a theoretical and an empirical one, both presented in article format. The theoretical paper, through a systematic review of the literature, sought to identify biopsychosocial aspects related to personality, according the theory of the Big Five in the elderly. The research included in the review presents a significant number of participants, offering samples represented by different countries in Europe and North America. The results showed that the personality characteristics may differ according to sex and age of the person. They also indicate that high or low levels of the characteristics influence how a person deals with aspects related to health, quality of life and social interaction activities. The empirical study aimed to examine the relation between personality traits and the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning in elderly. We conducted a quantitative and cross-cutting research with 108 elders residing in cities around Porto Alegre, who answered the following questionnaires: Socio-Demographic and Clinical Data Sheet, Personality Factor Battery (BFP) and The Older Adult Self-Report (OASR). In the statistical analysis, beyond the descriptive analysis, we estimated a Pearson correlation coefficient to assess the linearity relation. A multiple linear regression analysis was also performed, in order to determine which personality traits predict the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning. To estimate the reliability of the responses, we calculated the Cronbach alpha coefficient of the research tools. The results show that the personality trait Neuroticism was negatively correlated to the Adaptive Functioning and positively correlated to the Psychopathological operation, being considered the most relevant predictor of the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning. Thus, the findings indicate that personality traits can vary in intensity throughout life and have an influence on psychopathological and social aspects of the elderly. |
