In times of media convergence, traditional media are interacting in complex ways with new media. Because of modern technological tools, the public is producing and consuming content in a new manner. Social news sites that aggregate and filter content previously published on line, reproducing the preferences and tastes of a community, reflect the changes caused by the active participation of the public on line. This dissertation aimed to identify situations which the social news site Reddit and it’s contents, published by users, are reported by big traditional newspapers. The results were achieved based on a methodological plan that included the techniques of literature and document review and content analysis. Works from autors such as Jenkins (2009), Shirky (2011), Boczwoski (2005), Szabó (2009), Lemos (2010) and Lévy (2011) were essential to obtain the theoretical knowledge needed to better understand issues involving journalism in the era of convergence, the concepts and the characteristics of social news sites, as well as the current media ecosystem. This work aimed to study the Reddit website and analyze it, name it’s features, as well as The Guardian, The New York Times and O Globo newspapers. The results indicated that these publications use content from Reddit in their news and blog posts to report and comment on the events involving Reddit and it’s users (called redditors). Also two professional newspapers participated in the IAMA sessions hosted by Reddit, where the redditors interview someone famous or with a unusual life story. |
