Resumo: |
This study uses a corpus approach to investigate the construction of stance through noun phrases in Academic Brazilian Portuguese. The stance noun corpora is used in order to compare the use of stance in different areas, such as Science, humanities, etc. The theoretical background used to support this research is based on Biber s Stance Theory and Searle s Speech Act Theory. Although academic texts tend to be more objective, the authors leave their stance marks there, showing their point of view, their beliefs and discoveries. We confirmed the main hypothesis that Science areas use less stance nouns because of their more objective character. Disciplinary differences are also seen as a way to establish the choice of nouns in the different areas. This research is part of a bigger project from the Research Group at PUCRS called Additional Language Use and Processing (UPLA) that aims at helping the growing number of foreign students that are coming to this university to seek higher education. |
