Resumo: The present research aims to describe the newsworthiness about the borders of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with Argentina and Uruguay, in newspapers of different scopes: local, regional and national. Therefore, focuses in two twin-cities: Uruguaiana/Paso de los Libres (AR) and Santana do Livramento/Rivera (UY). The perspective on the southern borders of Brazil for its news reporting scales seeks to understand how the geographical area relates to the journalistic communication from inside and outside the location in order to transmit information, knowledge and generalizations that operate according to the perspectives of issuers of the news. Based on assumptions of the newsmaking hypothesis (TRAQUINA, 1999; WOLF, 2012), as well as bibliographic, documental and field researches. Techniques of Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2009) are applied in 78 unities of news about the southern borders published in 2012 in the local newspapers Diário da Fronteira (city of Uruguaiana) and A Platéia (city of Santana do Livramento), the regional newspaper Zero Hora (state of Rio Grande do Sul) and the national newspaper Folha de São Paulo. It is observed, at first, that, rather than studying the news based only on the journalistic environment, it is often necessary to consider contexts that go beyond newsrooms, such as the geographical space and the regional characteristics of the local where news are produced.
